What We Do

Call for Justice’s Mission: To improve access to justice by connecting low-income people to existing legal resources, in partnership with other legal service providers. We do this in several ways.  Please explore our programs below, and then visit our Success Stories page to see how each program has been effective in ensuring that our mission is met.

Enhancing Legal Referrals

One important goal of Call for Justice is to make legal referrals more effective and efficient for low and moderate-income people in Hennepin and Ramsey Counties. Call for Justice collaborates with legal providers and social service agencies for better information exchanges. Additionally, we maintain a database of various legal providers in the event of a difficult referral. This website is also our attempt to explain the civil legal system in clear and common sense terms. We believe that by doing so, we help the system become more efficient.  Our goal is to help people obtain legal assistance on the first or second call, not the tenth or eleventh.

Legal Liaison Program

The Call for Justice Legal Liaison Program works to increase knowledge about resources and needs in the nonprofit legal and social service communities. We believe a network of Legal Liaisons, effectively an “Access Network,” is the best way to ensure for the exchange of relevant and timely referral-related information.  With each organization designating one particular person as “the” Liaison responsible for referral-related information, the civil legal system becomes more efficient. With efficiency comes access. With access, the Justice Gap narrows. Call for Justice is the clearinghouse (think “air traffic controller”) for the information flowing between Legal Liaisons. Importantly, each bit of information is accompanied by commentary about how the information is relevant and how it fits into the larger legal services picture. Legal and social service providers alike, directly benefit from the program since Liaison information helps define legal resource capacity and needs. We don’t want to create another level of bureaucracy. To the contrary, the Legal Liaison Program is intended to cut through red tape to make the civil legal system more responsive.

See Legal Liaison FAQs and Core Principles of the Legal Liaison Program.  See a list of participating organizations here.  If your organization would like to become involved, please contact us.  There is no cost associated with participating in the Legal Liaison Program.

“Putting Out the Call”

Some legal referrals are more difficult than others. When difficult legal referrals arise, Call for Justice will “put out the call” to nonprofit legal providers in a special effort to match a low or moderate-income person with legal resources. This isn’t something we do routinely, but in special instances, we’ll step in and directly assist with a legal referral.

Speaking/Community Outreach

Part of our role is outreach to educate the community at large about our programs, and just as importantly, the Justice Gap and ways to close it. Our outreach efforts include speaking to community groups, a regular newsletter, and use of social media. If your group would like to know more about Call for Justice and our efforts to close the Justice Gap, please contact us to arrange for a presentation. We would be happy to meet you! Contact us at 612-333-4000 or send an email to lynn.hu@callforjustice.org. Also, find us on Twitter and Facebook.

Because justice first requires access.
